Abstract Endometriosis is a chronic and recurrent disease. Endometriosis is classically defined as the presence of functional endometrium outside the uterine cavity. The question of how the tissue obtains this abnormal placement is controversial, although the predominant theory is that retrograde menstruation is the cause. Additional factors that may be important in the pathogenesis of endometriosis include immunologic abnormalities, endometrial disorders and peritoneal dysfunction. Symptoms associated with endometriosis include infertility and pelvic pain. These non specific symptoms can accompany a wide variety of disorders and are not pathognomonic for endometriosis. Unusual symptoms linked to atypical location of disease can also occur. |
