Abstract

A Repco machine modified by replacing its oscillating roller with an air jet twister device was used to produce air jet ST yarns.
A new jet designed to improve yarn quality was developed and extensively tested; the effect of varying jet position on yarn properties was studied, and different arrangements for producing in-phase and phased yarn were implemented.
The new jet design and the jet arrangement for producting in-phase yarn improved yarn quality.
The twisting mechanism has been analysed and a computerized image system capable of capturing images of yarn at any required time along the whole cycle was developed to aid the analysis.
A theory suggesting that the formation of ST yarn can be considered to be result of two mechanisms; Repco ST mechanism and a mechanism resembling that happening in Sirospun, has been advanced.
An investigation of the processing parameters that can affect yarn quality such as yarn linear density, cycle length, speed ratio between the front roller and the take up roller, air jet pressure and spinning speed was carried out.
The results show that yarn quality improved with the reduction of yarn linear density, cycle length and speed ratio and with the increase of pressure.
Finally, a modified torque measuring system was developed to evaluate jet performance by measuring the torque created by the jet on a twistless strand.
The effect of selected parameters on the created torque was also considered.
