Abstract

A procedure for the purification of industrial wet process phosphoric acid (WPA) from its organic and insoluble solids is presented. The resultant clear acid would thus respond to various industrial applications including uranium recovery by solvent extraction. The latter actually necessitates the elimination or at least minimizing the organic content and insolubles in WPA, otherwise crud formation and slow uranium extraction rates would prevail.The studied procedure involves the treatment of the received dark brown/black acid with activated clay. The relevant factors including the clay versus the acid strength (density) and volume beside the agitation time have been optimized. The obtained experimental data are mathematically treated through dimensional analysis to develop a corresponding equation and a working diagram. This diagram has successfully been applied upon NMA phosphoric acid purification pilot plant two years ago.
