Abstract

The vitality of the respiratory system arises from its crucial role in purifying the deoxygenated blood coming from the body metabolism taking out its carbon dioxide and replacing it with oxygen coming from the inspired air.. Bleomycin is an antitumor antibiotic that has been used successfully to treat tumors a squamous arcinomas of the head, neck, lymphomas and testicular rumors. The major limitation of bleomycin therapy is the potential for developing life-threatening pulmonary toxicity. The aim of this work is to study the effect of bleomycin injection on the lung of albino rat and to test its reversibility after cessation of injection. Forty-eight adult male albino rats were used in this study, divided into three groups; negative and positive control groups and au experimental group that was subdivided into 5 subgroups receiving 0.5 mg bleomycin sulphate in 0.5 ml 0.9% .sodium chloride frat for 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks respectively and the last subgroup was Ieft to recover for 4 weeks after 4 weeks of treatment. Haematoxylin, Eosin and Mallory’s trichrome stains used for light microscopic examination showed loss of normal lung architecture with areas of overexpansion’ alternating with areas of ’Collapse, rounded cell infiltration, congestion of pulmonary blood vessels and interstitiallibrosis. Electron microscopic study results showed that type I pneumcytes were lost. Type n pneumcytes showed marked proliferation.’ After the period of recovery, the cellular infiltration partially resolved while the fibrosis persisted.
