Abstract Polyester/cotton blend textile in Egypt is one of the most crucial industries. However flammability of the textile is responsible for a large number of fatal casualties. This thesis describes studies of action of flame retardants on polyester/cotton fabric blends. Egyptian polyester/cotton blend was treated with diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAHP) on its own, < ’.ammonium sulphate (DAS) on its own, and a combinations of these two compounds. The experimental section describes the techniques used to prepare the polyester/cotton samples and to determine their flammability by means of the limiting oxygen index (LOI) method. Description is given too of the computer method used to fit polynomial functions to the observed data for polyester/cotton additive system and to plot these functions in the form of triangular diagram. Measurements of flammability were complemented by studies of the thermoanalytical behaviour of untreated polyester/cotton and of numerous treated polyester/cotton samples. |
