Abstract The toxic effect of the substituted urea herbicides, diuron and monuron were tested against cat fish (Ictularus punctatus) . LC50 values of diuron and monuron were 5.92 and 74.2 ppm respectively. It is clear that diuron was more toxic to cat fish than monuron. The activity of acetyl cholinesterase (AChE), adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) , transaminases [glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT), acid phosphatase (AcP) and alkaline phosphatase (A1P)] were measured in brain, liver, gill, kidney and muscle in a comparative study. The results detected that brain contained extremely high activity 67.33 H moles acetylthiocholine iodide hydrolyzed per mg protein per minute in comparison with other organs that contains almost negligible activity. Liver and muscle contained the highest level of Mg2+ ATPase, while brain contained the highest level of total ATPase activity. It was evident that the liver contained the highest activity of GOT followed by brain, while gill contained the least activity. The highest activity of GPT was found in liver followed by muscle and gill. Liver contained the highest activity of AcP followed by kidney. AcP was found at a low level in muscle. Maximum activity of A1P was found in Kidney. |
