Abstract

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease affecting over 300 million people throughout the world and represents a major health problem in Egypt. The development of an efficacious vaccine would have a dramatic impact on a significant portion of the human population.

In Dr. Amr Karim’s laboratory at Ain Shams University, a number of candidate vaccine antigens was identified and expressed. Antibodies from vaccinated rabbits or chronically infected humans were affinity purified against schistosomulae tegumental antigens and used to immunoscreen Schistosoma mansoni cDNA libraries. Numerous tegument-associated antigens were identified. Some of them were cloned into an appropriate vector for expression in vivo as DNA vaccines. The vaccine potential and immune responses of mice were evaluated through measurement of antibody, cytokine and immunoproliferative responses.
