Abstract Resorcinol was polymerized by El-Garfs method where anhydrous aluminum chloride is used as primary catalyst and ferric chloride as secondary catalyst with molar ratio of resorcinol:AlCI3:FeCh.6H20 (1:1:2) at 150°C and for 4 hours which are the optimum conditions for polymerization of resorcinol. IR Spectra and NMR showed that the structure of synthesized polymer is poly (1,3dihydroxy-2,5 phenylene)(pDHP). The pure polyresorcinol and zinc-polyresorcinol composite can be used as radio active shielding material where their mass absorption coefficient of y-rays is higher than mass absorption coefficient of lead by 9.44 times and 6.36 times for pure polymer when considering the reported value in the literature and the measured value under the same conditions of mass absorption coefficient of lead respectively. Generally for composite it is higher than that of lead in the range of 7.44 _ 8.48 times and in the range of 5 - 5.69 times when considering the reported value in the literature and the measured value under the same conditions of mass absorption coefficient of lead respectively. The composite containing I P% polymer is the most efficient and economic for radiation shielding. The pure polymer and composites containing 40% and 50% polymer have showed electrical semiconducting properties. The pure polymer has the maximum activation energy of electrical conductivity 74.82 k Joule/mol.K which is equivalent to (0.7758 eVIK). The increase of the percentage of zinc in the composite decreases the activation energy which reaches a minimum value at 60% zinc 12.725 k Joule/mol.K which is equivalent to (0.1319 eVIK), then decreasing the percentage ofzinc to 50% in the composite doubled the activation energy to 25.85 k Joule/moI.K which is equivalent to (0.2680 eV/K). The economic study showed that the pure polymer has the highest cost where the” cost of 1 kg is 562.2 L.E. The cost of prepared composite decreases as the amount of zinc powder increases in the composite, which is in the range of 121.38 - 513.54 L.E. |
