Abstract

swirl decay is computed and found to be dependent on the wall roughness, the swirl intensity at the diffuser inlet and the diffuser angle. Increasing the surface roughness makes the swirl decay faster along the conical diffusers compared to the smooth wall case. Increasing the total divergence angle of the diffuser relaxes the swirl decay in smooth and rough diffusers. The presence of surface roughness can increase the optimum divergence angle of rough wall conical diffusers, in case of nonswirling flow. The presence of swirl and surface roughness affects the flow regimes of diffusers. Therefore, the maximum performance of rough diffusers is obtained by trading-off the effects between the surface roughness and the inlet swirl intensities.
