Abstract

Through studying the flammability and the thermal behavior of uncontaminated, vegetable oil contaminated cellulose and investigating the thermal reaction that takes place for the oxidation process, the following conclusions are obtained.
I) Semi-drying oils, such as linseed oil, palm oil, cotton seed oil, sunflower oil produces a self-heating reaction on cotton cellulose, at a relatively lower temperature than uncontaminated cotton fabric. The oxidative degradation and the heat generated of the vegetable oil under certain conditions are considered to be the cause of such self-heating system.
2) The amount of semi-drying oil in the cotton fabric, and also the oxygen volume concentration, are considered to be the main factors influencing the rate of the oxidation reaction of cellulose.
3) A three reactions kinetic model may describe cellulose pyrolysis. This comprises a rapid initial activation of the cellulose, followed by slower reactions where direct volatile formation on one hand competes with char and gas formation on the other one.
4) The plot of l/Ti versus In [O2] gives two linear regions, which intersect at a critical oxygen concentration. The point of intersection decreases by increasing the oil contamination percent from a value of about 20% for uncontaminated fabric to about 10% oxygen volume concentration for 20% oil contamination percent. This suggests that two combustion mechanisms exist, one of them takes place
