Abstract A rise in aging population has been predicted. In Egypt, at 1996 elders represented 5.763% of population and at 2006 they present 6.274% (CAPMAS, 2007). As a result, it is expected that incidence of age-related health conditions will also increase. Although common in elderly, anemia is often mild and asymptomatic and rarely requires hospitalization (Balducci, 2003). The World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for anemia are hemoglobin value lower than 13 g/dl for men and 12 g/dl for women (WHO, 1968). A study of the prevalence of anemia among elderly in the United States revealed that overall 11.0% men and 10.2% of women 65 years and older and living in community are anemia according to WHO criteria (Guralink et al., 2004). |
