Abstract

Network management is needed to control and optimize the operation of the network and to respond to changing user requirements. With the vast amount of raw data available, most MIS Managers have no idea what they really want because, in part, they don’t know what’s available. Additionally, how does the data get into a
jf
format that actually means something. Other communications systems are considered non-manageable because they are only accessible by an RS-232 port and not by a management protocol. Others tend to believe that Network Management means nothing but the monitoring and management of network architectural hardware such as Routers, bridges and concentrators, nothing above the network layer of the OSI model is considered manageable.
What’s alarming is that most Senior Network Engineers tend to be resigned to spend thousands of dollars on hardware and software before the real requirements are gathered and defined. Consequently, MIS departments either spend very little on network management or they ”go for broke” with the huge hardware platforms and expensive artificial intelligence engines driving network management for the company.
Our aim of this thesis is to show the network managers how to manage their existing networks and how to use the available tools to understand it, the case study is applied to manage the network in the banks environment. Our case have a network with multi-vendors network components (Bay Networks, Cray, Annex, 3Com...), also with different operating systems (UNIX, Windows NT, Novell, DOS) that we face a

i*cfwork environment with multi protocols running in the network (TCP/IP, IPX,

fUetBEUI). We showed with the protocol analysers, different internet management
and with the application management how to manage the existing networks and the most out of it. Finally we produce our recommendations for the network rers will help in future planning.
The thesis consists of six chapters, chapter 1 describe the functional cture of the network management, chapter 2 is a survey about the critical
