Abstract

Sepsis (systemic inflammatory response to infection) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in critically-ill pediatric patients.
Beta cell leukemia\ lymphoma protein (Bcl-2), a 239 amino acids protein. This protein is responsible for mitochondria-dependent pathway for apoptosis. Apoptosis, programmed cell death, is a process by which cells undergo inducible, nonnecrotic, cellular suicide.
The aim of our work was to study the value of assessment of the protein (Bcl-2) as a single marker to predict the final outcome in a group of critically-ill infants and children with sepsis syndrome.
The study was conducted on 36 critically-ill patients with sepsis admitted to PICU (during the period from February 2007 to August 2007) with a mean age of 3.2± 2.8 years. Patients included 21 males (58.3 %) and 15 females (41.7 %). This study included also 20 healthy infants and children with a mean age of 3.8 ± 2.3 years. Controls included 15 males (75.0 %) and 5 females (25.0 %).
