Abstract Thirty female patients with early breast cancer scheduled to undergo axillary nodal dissection, as a step of breast conserving surgery or modified radical mastectomy, underwent CT breast and axilla 24 hours after intralesional modified lipiodol injection(by adding of several colouring agents) for identification of enhanced axillary lymph nodes both pre-operatively and intra-operatively. The findings were compared to the pathological findings of the axillary evacuation of these cases. Intra-operative obtaining of axillary nodes was directly related to the appropriate added colouring agent. CT pre-operative identification of lipiodol enhanced lymph nodes showed an 88.8% sensitivity and 91.6% specificity of identifying pathological involvement of lymph nodes by metastatic deposits. Coloured lipiodol by Sudan black injected in 13 cases showing blackish discolouration of axillary lymph nodes in 5 cases in intraoperative field with 83.3% sensitivity in detection of involved lymph nodes by metastases. |
