Abstract Measurements of the amount of nitrate and nitrite ’have been carried out in some soils, samples of ground and surface waters, and in edible parts of selected fresh plants. 1.1. Nitrate and nitrite in soils: Total amount of nitrate and nitrite were determin¬ed in samples of soil profiles collected from different geographical areas west of Nile Delta. In soils culti¬vated into vegetables and fertilized with either commercial nitrogen fertilizers or feedlot wastes; the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite reached a very high levels in the surface soil layer (N.D._ 238.7 ppm-N03, and 0.2-8.5 ppm-N02) .’ On the other side, in soils cultivated into legumes and no N-fertiliz-er treatment were added, the concentrations of both ions were generally low (far below the limits of detectability for nitrate, and 0.18-1.5 ppm-NC>2) • Nitrate and nitrite, also, were in low levels in sandy soils and in soils contain appreciable levels of ammonium ion. 1.2. Nitrate and nitrite in water: The levels of nitrate and nitrite were determined in samples of ground and surface waters. |
