Abstract

It is well known that the restorative dental materials are divided into cements, metal alloys and polymers. Dental cements are materials of comparatively low strength but they are used extensively in dentistry when strength is not a prime consideration.
Dental cements are employed as luting agents, thermal insulators, temporary or permanent filling, and for pulp capping.
Zinc phosphate cement is the oldest of the luting cements, it serves as a standard with which newer systems may be compared(<y) .
Because of the importance of this kind of cement and its wide use in dentistry, it was imported by the pharmaceutical companies although its raw materials are available in Egypt and the cement can be locally produced.
The basic constituent of zinc phosphate powder is zinc oxide, and the principal modifier is magnesium oxide. The liquid which is complementary for the cement, is essentially composed of phosphoric acid, aluminium, zinc metal and distilled water.
This study aims to prepare locally zinc phosphate cement for the first time in Egypt which can be used as luting or base liner material, and investigate the effect of the variations in the composition and heat treatment on the physical and mechanical properties of this cement.
