Abstract Aim of the study: 1- To detect early osteoporosis among employees of Al-Minya University. 2-To study some of the risk factors of osteoporosis among employees of Al-Minya University. 3- To disseminate knowledge about osteoporosis to employees of Al-Minya University in a trial to prevent or reduce the progress of the disease. Conclusion: 1. The percentage of osteoporosis was: 24% among the studied employees of Al-Minya university aged 35-60 years old, higher among females, increased with age, higher among urban employees, lower among highly educated employees, decreased with increase in frequency of intake of milk, cheese, eggs, green vegetables and fresh fruits and with increase in exercise while increased with increase in frequency of intake of meat, tea, coffee and soft drink. 2. The osteoporotic female employees had higher age at menarche, lower age at menopause and longer duration of amenorrhea, higher parity, lesser spacing between children, longer duration of lactation and more breast fed children. 3. The osteoporotic employees suffered more from hyperthyroidism, diabetes type-I, renal disease, liver disease, gastric disease, epilepsy, rheumatologic disease and immobilization. Recommendations: 1- Increase awareness about osteoporosis among different age groups of both sexes 2- Ensure adequate calcium and nutrition intake and encourage physical activity. 3- Keeping average body weight. 4- Adequate maternal health promotion and regulation of reproductive life. |
