Abstract The present study was carried out to compare the meat producing ability of the Egyptian Baladi and Zaraibi goats and to study the effect of castration on their performance during fattening, at slaughter and their meat characteristics. Sixteen six—month old male kids, eight of each of the two breeds, were used in the study. Threentales from each breed were castrated by the open method. They were fattened for a period of 25 weeks in shaded open pens. The fattening concentrate ration consisted of whole millets (66%), wheat bran (%) and common salt (1%) and was offered at the rate of 30000 gm/head daily v.ith barseen hay ad libitum. L:easurements of body weight end dimensions were made periodically every week until slaughter.
