Abstract The process of coagulation/flocculation plays an essential role in water treatment. This process is affected by the preceding steps of treatment as preliminary chlorination. It also affects the following steps as sedimentation, filtration, activated carbon filter and final disinfection. The importance of this step is not only related to its efficiency in removing particles but also results from its efficiency in eliminating protozoa that cause (es) several fatal disease, and cannot be destroyed by using chlorine. Recently, they discovered the ability of this step in removing natural organic matter (NOM) that exist in water. Thus, it reduce the danger of disinfection byproducts that comes from the reaction of these substances with chlorine, therefore, minimizing serious health risk associated with those byproducts, especially cancer. The study aims to optimize the use of a new inorganic coagulants composite in relation to pre-chlorinating treatment of surface water in Damanhour Water Plant, and its impact on enhancing the process of water treatment and water quality. The jar-test, which represent the coagulation/flocculation and sedimentation process was used in the study. The raw water of El-Khandak El-Sharky band, which represents the intake of Damanhour plant (contract 4A), was used in the test. The parameters measured in the jar test was chosen to enable good jKlgement on the efficiency of the coagulation process. The parameters sured included floe formation time, size, sedimentation rate, >idity, natural organic matter, absorption of organic matter at 254 leter, pH, natural colour (true and apparent), alkalinity, sulphate, |
