Abstract

The positions, sizes, and shapes of ventricular septal defects (VSDs) can be difficult to assess by 2-dimensional echocardiography (2DE). Volume-rendered 3-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) can provide unique views of VSDs from the left ventricular (LV) side, allowing complete assessment of their circumference and spatial orientations to other anatomic structures.
Both 2DE and Doppler color flow mapping have proven to be valuable for diagnosis and monitoring of VSDs. However, the limited ability of 2D images to visualize the entire shape and contours of the VSD prohibits an accurate quantification as RT-3DE imaging provides an undisputed presentation of defect morphology and spatial orientation.
The current study was done to assess the feasibility and accuracy of 3DE in morphological and functional assessment of patients with VSD pre and postoperatively.
