Abstract This study compares the possible deleterious effects of both ciprofloxacin and gatifloxacin on pregnant rats and developing foeti during both the gestation and suckling periods. I - Effects on dams and developing foeti:- Administration of drugs for 5 consecutive days to pregnant dams during foetal period provoked a decrease in the placental weight & body weight gain on the 20th day of pregnancy. There was a decrease in viable foeti, foetal body weight and length with increase in resorbed foeti, pre-and post-implantation deaths in most groups. Examination of internal organs showed thickening of heart ventricular wall; dilatation of brain ventricular wall and widening of renal pelvis while skeletal examination revealed incomplete ossification of cranial bone; absence of last coccygeal vertebrae; absence of digits in limbs and hyperplasia of sternebrae. The histopathological examination of liver& kidney of dams and their foeti showed degenerative changes. II- Effects on mortality and growth rates of neonates during suckling period:- Administertion of the drugs to lactated dams for 5 consecutive days from 1st day postnatal evoked decrease in body weight and growth rate of neon |
