Abstract

This thesis comprises six chapterst
1. Chapter I comprises the theoretical basis of the principles of polarography and a literature survey of the polarographio studies on cadmium, nickel, p-nitrotoluen©, nitrosobenzene and on the polarography in mixed solvents.
2. Chapter II describes the experimental techniques, namely the preparation and analysis of Stock solutions and supporting electrolytes, purification of the organic solvents, and work¬ing procedure described.
3. Chapter III, includes the results of the polarographic behaviour of cadmium in aqueous and mixed solvents-essentially aqueous-methanol, aqueous-ethylene glycol and aqueous-gly cerol.
In pure aqueous solutions containing 0.1M LiCl the polaro§raphic reduction of Cd”1”* gives one reversible wave. Effect of the composition of the solvent on the polarographio behaviour of cadmium is discussed in the light of effect of alcohol, i) on the diffusion current, ii) on the half-wave potential and iii) on the kinetics of the electrode process.
i) Effect of alcohol on the kinetics of the electrode process- is investigated by plotting the relation log i/(id-i) vs. E in pure aqueous solutions and in water-alcohol mixtures
