Abstract
Thyroid hormones are essential for normal body growth, sexual maturation and reproductive function. Few studies were made to investigate the effect of hypothyroidism on the ultrastructure of the testicular and epididymal cells. Hence, it became the aim of the present work to study the ultrastructural changes of testicular and epididymal cells induced by the decrease in the thyroid hormone in pubertal and adult rats. Additional work was conducted to verify the effect of hypothyroidism on the components of the spermatic cord.
One hundred and twenty male albino rats of different ages were used in this study. Animals were divided into three groups as follows:
Group І: Consisted of 40 neonatal rats (just after birth).
Group ІІ: consisted of 40 pubertal rats (average age 7 weeks).
Group ІІІ: consisted of 40 adult rats (average age 3 months).
The rats in each group were divided into:
Ten rats were used as control (Groups Ia, IIa, IIIa).
Thirty rats were given Neomercazole for four weeks then were further divided into:
• Ten rats were sacrificed (Groups Ib, IIb, IIIb).
• Ten rats were left for two weeks for spontaneous recovery (Groups Ic, IIc, IIIc).
• Ten rats were given Eltroxin for another two weeks (Groups Id, IId, IIId).
