Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an auto immune disease that affects many organ systems. It is more prevalent in females. There Is no known definite etiology, for the disease, but a distinct association with several Immune response genes have been reported. Multiple systerns are commonly involved by the disease of which the brain, peripheral nervous system, lungs, heart, kidneys, skin, serous membranes, and components of the blood are the most common. Many other systems can be affected although with lesser frequency..
The predominance of this disease among females after puberty cannot be adequately explain., however, pathogenetic factors Include sex, steroid hormones and gonadotrophins.m
Other environmental factors including drugs, dint, and toxins have been Implicated in the pathogenesis of SIC. Although, there is no association with a constitutive gene, lupus is associated with specific immune response genes in the mqjor histocompatibility complex (MtiC) class II region, the tiLA-DR2 and DR, alleles which are found more commonly with certain auto antibody groups. Patten. with Inherited .mplement (WIC class III) deficiencies also.
