Abstract

Organic photochemical reactions conducted in micellar solutions are topics of interest to the scientific research. Five common effects are found to distinguish and characterize micellar photochemistry relative to conventional solution photochemistry: “super” cage effects, local concentration effects, viscosity effects, polarity effects and electrostatic effects. These effects can contribute to the occurrence of enhanced selectivity and efficiency of photoreactions relative to those in conventional homogeneous solution. The change in products and the rate of reactions in micellar systems compared to homogenous solutions can be used to help to identify the mechanism of a reaction.
Micelles are useful environments for studying the behavior of several photochemical reactions such as excimer formation, quenching reactions, photoionization, hydrogen abstractions, electron and proton transfer as well as photo-oxidation. The interest of studying the photochemistry in organized assemblies may be loaded as models for photoprocesses in biology and also as systems for storage of solar energy. Particular interest in micellar systems arises from their important role in solubilization process (dissolution of substances in micellar solution which is insoluble in the pure solvent).
