Abstract In order to elucidate the role of parathyroid hormone related peptide (PTHrp) on calcium homeostasis in diabetes, serum parathyroid hormone, serum parathyroid hormone related peptide, serum calcium and phosphorus, serum albumin, fasting blood sugar and 2-hour postprandial and renal function tests were measured. The serum concentration of parathyroid hormone in NIDDM patients was significantly lower than controls. On the other hand, serum parathyroid hormone related peptide was significantly higher when compared with controls. In this study calcium level was normal although serum parathyroid hormone levels were decreased. This data is going with the international data and, therefore, the elevated serum parathyroid hormone related peptide might have a physiologically compensatory role on the calcium regulatory systems in NIDDM patients.
