Abstract The aim of this work was to determine whether estimation of sialic acid level, both in the serum and ascitic fluid of patient related ascites is of significance in detecting malignant ascites. The mean sialic acid in serum was highly significantly higher in malignant group than non-malignant group, both of which were highly significantly higher than the control. The mean sialic acid level in ascitic fluid was significantly higher than in malignant group versus non-malignant group. The results revealed a significant association between a malignancy and raised sialic acid level in serum and ascitic fluid. |
