Abstract
Housewife eczema is widely spread among Egyptian women of different social classes & educational levels. The study revealed that this eczema is due to prolonged exposure to soap & detergents. Skin type & responsiveness to irritant & inflammatory agents are closely related. There are a group of people who are prone to react to irritation & they represent about 20% of the normal population. A considerable significance is attached to the relationship between hand eczema & atopy. Etiology of housewife eczema is complex involving both endogenous & exogenous factors. Ammonia, solvents, cosmetics perfumes, bleaches & many other substances may act either as irritants or allergens.
