Abstract The present investigation was earned out to study some aspects of the live animal growth traits of Friesian calves reared under the Egyptian environmental conditions in order to throw more light on the potentialities of this daiiy breed for beef production. This study involved the evaluation of some non-genetic factors influencing body weights at different ages and daily gain during various periods of fattening as well as the genetic parameters of the studied traits. Data involved in the analyses were the weight records of 8272 Friesian calves born and raised during the years of 1987-1992 at Dallah Agricultural Investment and Animal Production Company located at the Western Nobaria Sector, Alexandria-Cairo Desert toad, Km 75. The traits studied were the birth weight, weaning weight, 6-months weight, yearling weight and adjusted final weight In addition to the daily gain from birth to weaning, 3 to 6 months, 6 to 12 months, and 12 to 16 months of age. The factors studied affecting the forementioned variables were the effects of herd, age of dam, sex of calf, season of birth and year of birth. The various statistical models and functions were analyzed in the computer center belonging to the Department of Animal Husbandiy, Faculty of Veterinaiy Medicine, Alexandria University. The results were presented in tables and discussed under their corresponding headings. |
