Abstract The effect of changing the type, oxidation state of metal ion and, the counter ions involved in the reaction and associated with the metal ions as well as the solution pH upon the mode of coordination of nitrilotriacetic acid (H3NTA) have been investigated. The solid complexes [Cu(HNTA)(H2O)], Na[Cu(HNTA)]H2O, [Cu(HNTA)Et3N]H2O, [Cu(HNTA)(bipy)1/2]2H2O, [Cu(HNTA)(Phen)1/2]2H2O, [Ca2(H2NTA)2(SO4)(H2O)2], [Ca(H2NTA)2], [Ni(HNTA)H2O], [Ni(HNTA)(bipy)1/2]1½H2O, [Ni(HNTA)(Phen)1/2]2H2O, [Cr(NTA)(H2O)2] and [Fe(NTA)] have been isolated and identified by their elemental analysis, infrared spectra and thermal analysis. According to the data obtained, geometrical structure for all of these complexes have been proposed and it was found that nitrilotriacetic acid interacts with all of these metal ions as bi-, tri- or tetradentate ligand and the extent of their interaction is governed by the solution pH and the type of metal ion |
