Abstract

One hundred and forty six (146) Egyptian healthy male volunteers working at Inshas area (in Nuclear Research Center and Hot Laboratories Center) and living in three governorates (Cairo, Kalyobia and Sharkia) were participated in the present study. The study aimed to assess, by conventional and nuclear techniques, the effect of age, hypertension, stress, residence, smoking and diet on the prevalence of hyperlipidaemia and
apo-lipoproteins serum level. It also aimed to investigate the possible role of hyperhomocysteinemia on the progress of atherogenesis.
The healthy conditions of each individual was confirmed by medical history, clinical examinations and several confirmatory tests termed ESR, Hb, FBS, creatinine, urea, ALT and AST. Thereafter the lipid profile cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL), apolipoproteins (apoA-I and apoB), vitamin B12, folic acid and homocysteine were evaluated from another fasting specimen. The lipid profile was determined by biochemical analysis, apolipoproteins by single radial immunodiffusion and vitamin B12, folic acid by radioimmunoassay (RIA) while the serum homocysteine was assayed by ELISA.
