Abstract Polychaetes represent an important part of benthic invertebrates in marine environments. They play a great role in the food web of the marine ecosystem. They are usually distributed in the intertidal zone and considered as a good and palatable food for many economic marine animals. Some of them can be tolerant to the pollution and act as indicator for it. Studies of these animals in the Suez Bay have special importance because this area is located beside the factories which are distributed on the northern and western side of the bay .Their effluent cause different types of pollution. Since, these animals are affected in their distribution and diversity by these pollutants. From this point rises the importance of this study. The area of study is a shallow extension of the Gulf of Suez, extents 77.13 km2 with mean depth of 10m. The Bay is connected to the Gulf of Suez through most of its south eastern side. It is also connected to the Suez Canal by a dredged channel of 12m depth through the same side. The northern part of the Bay is occupied by the Suez City and its major factories. |
