Abstract
Review of the literature concerning malignant tumors of the ovary was presented. Tt included types, classification, staging, methods of diagnosis and the different modalities of treatment, stressing on the chemotherapy modality.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the combination chemotherapy gemcitabine and cisplation as a first line treatment in the management of advanced ovarian cancer. The results of this study was compared with the old standard cisplatin / cyclophosphamide combination chemotherapy as regards the response rate, toxicity and survival rates.
The study included 30 patients with histologically proved advanced stages III and TV ovarian carcinoma according to FIGO staging system.
All cases were presented to a thorough history taking, clinical examination, medical and special gynecological examination for diagnosis and staging.
Laboratory investigations in general were done added to the tumor marker CA-125, radiological investigations were also done including X-ray chest, pelvi-abdominal ultrasonography, and pelvi-abdominal computed tomography, in addition to cytological examination of the ascitic or pleural fluid when present.
