Abstract For catfish breeding programmes on commercial scale it is necessary to sacrifice the donner male since it is difficult to obtain enough amount of milt by stripping procedure. Accordingly. the present study was undertaken to induce maximal increase in testis and seminal vesicle volume For this purpose male catfish ( Clarias lazera ) were treated during the reproductive resting period ( Jan. — Feb. and during the breeding period I May - June ) . 36 males were used for each period and allocated in 6 groups 6 fish 4 each Treatments included Group 1 Intraperitoneal injection of saline (Control group) Group 2 Carp pituitary homogenate injected I.M. Group 3 : Human chorionic gonadotrophin Group 4 Luteinizing hormone . releasing hormone analogue LHRHa )5* Group 5 LHRHa + Metachlopramide C a dopamine inhibitor to potentiate the effect of LHPHa Group 6 Freunds complete adjuvant which proved in a preliminary study to stimulate gonadal growth in catfish .The fish in all groups were killed after a latency period of 12—16 h. except for fish in group S which were killed 14 days after treatment. |
