Abstract * Liver function tests ( ALT, AST and bilirubin) can not be used as a reliable marker of HGV infection in multiply - transfused patients. * HGV coinfection probably does not have a significant effect on hepatitis C virus - induced hepatic injury. Thus, this study revealed that the multiply - transfused patients ill our locality are at high risk for HGV infection. However, despite the high rate of HGV transmission, it has not been found to be a predominant cause of transfusion associated non-A-E hepatitis therefore, if a significant liver disease and/or any other disorders associated with HGV infection is established, it will be necessary to develop a practical screening assay to exclude HGV infection from the donors blood . The development of such test system is a matter of urgency smce mass screening of blood donors, usmg the PCR technique is highly impractical at present, although it is the most sensitive method. |
