Abstract

The aim of the present study was to isolate and identify bacteria associated with nasal tract of cattle suspect to have blue tongue disease, as well as isolate and identify bacteria associated with vaginal and rectal swabs collected from cattle suspect to have blue tongue disease and other apparently healths cattle in Al Mahmodia, Behera Province. Then determine the common and predominant bacteria isolated and compare with isolated bacteria from apparently healthy cattle. For the purpose of this study, 60 nasal swabs, 50 vaginal swabs and 60 rectal swabs were collected from cattle suspect to have blue tongue disease, as well as 20 were collected from apparently healthy cattle. The results could be summarized as follows:
•The bacteriological examination of 60 nasal swab samples collected from cattle suspect to have blue tongue disease revealed that 34 of the examined samples (56.7%) were bacteriologically positive while the bacteriological examination of 20 nasal swabs collected from apparently healthy cattle revealed that 16 of them (80%) were bacteriologically positive.
•The bacteriological examination of 34 nasal swabs collected from cattle suspect to have blue tongue disease revealed that Pasteureia multocida was the most predominant bacteria as it was isolated from 16 samples (47.06%) followed by Escherichia coil (32.35%), Enterobacter aerogenes (11.76%), Mannheimia haemolytica (8.82%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (8.82%), KIebsiella pneumoniae (8.82%) and Proteus vulgaris (2.94%). 27 of the positive examined samples yielded single cultures and 7 of the positive examined samples yielded mixed cultures.
•The bacteriological examination of 16 nasal swabs collected from apparently healthy cattle revealed that Escherichia coil was the most predominant bacteria as it was isolated from 12 samples (75%) followed by Pasteureila multocida (18.75%), Enterobacter aerogenes (18.75%), Mannheimia haemolytica (18.75%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (6.25%).10 of the positive examined samples yielded single cultures and 6 of the positive examined samples yielded mixed cultures.
‘The bacteriological examination of 50 vaginal swab samples collected from cattle suspect to have blue tongue disease revealed that 40 of them (80%) were bacteriologically positive.
‘The bacteriological examination of 40 vaginal swabs collected from cattle suspect to have blue tongue disease revealed that Escherichia coil was the most predominant bacteria. It was isolated from 29 samples (72.5%) followed by Staphylococcus aureus (32.5%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (27.5%), Streptococcus pyogenes (22.5%) and Arc hanoba cieriumpyogenes (5%). 16 of the positive examined samples yielded single cultures and 24 of the positive examined samples yielded mixed cultures.
