Abstract

The study is a trial to evaluate the role of gonadal sex hormones in the pathophysiologic mechanism through either exclusion by gonadectomy or resupplementation by exogenous administration. In conclusion , a gender difference in the pathogenesis of stress ulcer has been proved in the present work with more predominance in male albino rats than in females. This gender difference could be ascribed to sex hormone variation. The male sex hormone , testosterone , has an ulcerogenic effect on the gastric mucosa. It increases gastric acidity ( aggressive factor), but decreases the antioxidant defense mechanisms and NO levels of the gastric mucosa ( protective factor).
