Abstract

The current study was conducted to evaluate clinically, radiographically and histologically the application of a local dose of simvastatin in the management of periodontal intrabony defects in chronic periodontitis patients.
Accordingly, the study comprised two main sections; a clinical and radiographic section to evaluate treatment outcome in human subjects and a histologic section using an experimental dog model.
A total number of ten systemically healthy. chronic periodontitis patients were recruited for the clinical study. Prior to surgery, they were placed on a comprehensive oral hygiene program. Full- mouth scaling and root planning were performed. This phase lasted till the O’Leary plaque index (100,426) approached a value of about 10%.
Twenty periodontal osseous defects were selected to participate in this study. Every ten defects were randomly assigned to one of the following groups:
● group I: comprised 10 defects that were managed by surgical debridement and adjunctive use of 2.2 mg simvastatin granules.
●● group II: comprised 10 defects that were treated with surgical debridment alone.
The following clinical parameters were recorded at baseline, six and nine months postoperatively. Gingival index, (430) probing pocket depth (431) and clinical attachment level. (431)
Furthermore, standardized periapical radiographs were taken at baseline, and repeated at three, six and nine months after surgery. Linear and densitometric analysis of the radiographs were measured using computer assessed program Image J (434) in order to record alveolar bone height and radiographic optical density at these time points.
