Abstract

The present study was conducted to determine the levels of IL-1? concentra¬tion in GCF and serum among adult periodontitis patients with and without stress, and healthy controls, as well as the relationship between IL-1? concentra¬tion and periodontal and psychological parameters.
A total of seventy adult subjects participated in the present study including sixty adult periodontitis patients according to AAP criteria and 10 healthy controls. They were divided into three main groups:
Group I: it consisted of 30 adult periodontitis patients with stress.
Group II: it comprised 30 adult periodontitis patients without stress.
This classification was based on the use of two psychological measures:
A: social readjustment rating scale for determining stressors.
B: Eysenk personality questionnaire to detect type of personality.
We used the study group median of these two measurements to stratify the subjects into stressed and non-stressed groups. .
Patients belonging to these two groups were further subclassified on the basis of measurement of clinical attachment loss and radiographic alveolar bone level into three subgroups representing patients with mild, moderate and severe perio¬dontitis.
Group III : it consisted of 10 age matched, healthy controls with almost clinically healthy gingiva and having no stress.
All participants were subjected to the following:
I. Clinical dental examination using:
1. Plaque index.
2. Retention index.
3. Papillary bleeding index.
4. Measurements of probing depth and clinical attachment loss.
5. Assessment of alveolar bone level.
II. Immunological studies that comprised:
1. Estimation of serum concentration of IL-1?.
2. Estimation of GCF concentration of IL-1?.
These two estimations were carried out by using enzyme linked immunosor¬ bent assay (ELISA).
