Abstract Interferons exert a broad spectrum of biological effects including antiviral, antiproliferative, antitumorous, immunomodulatory and antimicrobial effect. Based on their natural activity, limited toxicity and availability through recombinant DNA technology, interferons have been studied for therapeutic efficacy in a number of diseases including tumors as cutaneous T cell lymphoma, infectious diseases including viral diseases, parasitic infestations diseases and bacterial infections. Interferons are also used in autoimmune diseases. The use of interferons is associated with potential side effects that are in most of cases slight and reversible, including flu-like symptoms, suppression of the haemopoietic system and various cutaneous side effects.. |
