Abstract

The aim of present work is to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) in pregnant women. Assess the risk factors for HCV infection in pregnant and to detect the mother –to-infant transmission rate of HCV infection.
This study show the significance of parental route as a main route of HCV infection and focus on the importance of blood transfusion, occupation and multiple tissue puncture as a real risk factors for infection. The study gives a spot light on the importance of surgery especially the gynecological or the obstetrical one as risk factor for HCV infection . We conclude on the basis of this study that the over all seroprevalence rate of HCV among pregnant women were 23% and mother to infant transmission rate of HCV was 8.7% Pregnancy does not induce a deterioration of liver disease and HCV infection does not increase the risk of obstetric complications.
On the basis of this study we conclude that the seroprevalence rate of HCV among pregnant women was 23% and mother to infant transmission rate of HCV was 2.17% .Because of this high seroprevalence rate of HCV, we recommended doing routine screening for HCV infection among pregnant women to control the HCV infection and to detect persistent and chronic cases of infection with its sequagalae.Further work therefore needs to be done with term follow up for the mother and baby after delivery.
