Abstract

The study of lumbar spine instability involves the study of it’sanatomy, biomechanics, pathology, diagnosis whether clinical orradiological and methods of treatment which include conservative andsurgical methods.
Anatomy of lumbar spine includes the lumbar vertebral anatomy,it’s articulations, intervertebral disc anatomy, muscles, ligaments, lumbar spine movements and blood supply of the lumbar spine.
The human intervertebral disc has several characteristics whichare very important in order to understand it’s biomechanics as elasticcharacteristics and viscoelastic characteristics. One of the physicalproperties important for the normal physiological function is the effectof loads on the ligaments of lumbar spine which could be observedfrom load deformation curves. Also it is important to know that thevertebrae decrease in strength with age. The facet joints are importantstabilizing structures, as their surgical excision, unilaterally orbilaterally, often leads to spinal instability.
Causes of lumbar spine instability include almost all pathologiesaffecting the lumbar spine such as : trauma, infections involving anterior columns, neoplastic including primary and metastaticneoplasm, degenerative diseases whether primary or secondary, spondylolisthesis and scoliosis.
The problem of clinical instability of lumbar spine is unsolved, and the goal is to provide a systemic approach to the problem ofclinical instability of lumbar spine in general.
