Abstract

In this study a total number of fifty eight horses of both sexes with average age of 6-10 years were used to investigate different types of acute abdominal pain. A wide set of diagnostic procedures including: physical examination of each horse, laboratory examinations and using abdominal ultrasonography for confirming the diagnosis.
The study was concerned for study of gastrointestinal and non- gastrointestinal abdominal pains. So, horses with signs of acute abdominal pain were classified into six groups and each compared to control group. Ten horses were clinically healthy obtained from the Military Veterinary Hospital for Treatment and Labs, fourteen horses had spasmodic colic, eleven horses suffered from flatulent colic, ten horses showed impactive colic, four horses had obstructive colic, five horses revealed cystitis and four horses showed signs of urine retention. On admission, when first examined, each horse had a wide set of observations including a complete history and thorough physical examination. In addition to routine physical examination; rectal examination, temperature, pulse, respiration, mucous membrane, lymph nodes, heart rate and intestinal auscultation were performed. Blood samples were collected from each horse for
hematological and biochemical analysis. Ultrasonography was applied to all horses used in this study and compared to laboratory data and physical examination findings for obtaining a prognosis. Some cases that not respond totreatment and died were examined for postmortem findings.
