Abstract The aim of this work is to evaluate the effect of the three inhalational agents halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane on hepatocellular integrity by measuring the liver function tests through the preoperative period meanwhile comparing effect of general anesthesia for ophthalmologic operation on liver function. Conclusions: 1- Although general anesthesia with any of halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane in patients with normal preoperative liver function tests, sevoflurane looks to have the advantage of homodynamic stability and more liver conservation. 2- Local anesthesia is safer than general anesthesia regarding liver affection. 3- Routine liver function tests are a valid method to evaluate the hepatic effects of inhalational anesthetics. Recommendations: 1- Promote use of sevoflurane as inhalational agent for its relative hepatic safety. 2- Use of routine liver function tests as additional routine test for both preoperative and postoperative evaluation of liver integrity after inhalational and regional anesthesia for ophthalmic operations. 3- Further investigation of the effects of anesthetic agents on normal and diseased liver. |
