Abstract The aim of this work was to evaluate plasma levels of endothelin-1 and interleukin-8 in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome and in infants and children with bronchial asthma and to determine whether ET-1 and/ or IL-8 are specific markers of lung injury or not. In conclusions, plasma levels of both ET-1 and IL-8 are increased in cases of neonatal RDS, in both preterm and full term neonates and in cases of bronchial asthma, during the attacks. Plasma IL-8 level is also increased in cases of bronchial asthma, in between the attacks. There is a significant increase in plasma ET-1 level in asthmatic cases during the attacks than those in between the attacks. We also conclude that, the increase in plasma ET-1 and IL-8 levels in cases of neonatal RDS and bronchial asthma could be related to the pathophysiology of both diseases, and they could be considered as markers of lung injury. |
