Abstract

Reliability is one of the most important aspects in quantifying the quality of any power system. The two main components of reliability are security and adequacy. Security focuses on the coordination between the protections devices in the power system to minimize the number of affected zones due to any fault at any other zone. While adequacy focuses on the interruption durations and the frequency of occurrence of these interruptions at the different load points or for the overall system. br This thesis concerns with the adequacy analysis of distributed generation systems and offers methodologies to judge the system performance. Computer software programs were developed in this research to estimate reliability indices based on Monte Carlo simulation. Different generation techniques are examined to get a clear vision for the effect of the generation type on the system reliability. The impact of wind energy on the systems reliability is integrated with the analysis performed in this thesis to examine the effect of this world wide booming alternative energy sources. A suggested approach to model a wind energy farm is developed and integrated with other technologies in this thesis. br Cost worth reliability evaluation is implemented in an attempt to judge on the worth of any modifications that could be done in a given power network from the reliability point of view. This evaluation is done through two routes; the first one depends on the direct costing method where the type or the category of load makes a difference [1], while the other approach applies the system indices method whose estimation mainly depends on the customer reliability interruption.
