Abstract

The current study was carried out on twenty-six buffalo females belonged to the experimental farm of the Animal Reproduction Research Institute. The average age of the animals ranged between 2-5 years old and the aninials were divided into 4 groups according to the type of treatment given to each group. The first group included 11 buffaloes without any treatment. The second group included 5 buffaloes injected with a single dose of 25mg PGF2 after previous ultrasound diagnosis of mature corpus luteum. The third group included 5 buffaloes injected with double doses of PGF2 11 days apart. The 4th group included 5 buffaloes treated with ovsynch protocol (GPG). The animals in all groups ere subjected to Ultrasound scanning of the ovaries to determine follicular waves and corpus luteum development and blood sampling for estimation of estradiol and progesterone levels.
The• animals that showed two waves of follicular development constitute 72.7%, while those with three waves were 27.3%. The average length of the estrous cycle was 21.75±0.53 days in animals with 2-wave cycles, while those with three waves were
27.0±0.58 days.
In animals with 2-wave cycle, the maximum diameter of the dominant follicle of the first wave was 1.05±0.04 cm and was recorded on day 10 of the cycle. The maximum diameter of the dominant follicle in wave 2 (preovulatory follicle) was 1.32±0.02 cm on day 21 of the cycle. The duration of the corpus luteum was 17 days and the maximum diameter of the mature CL was 1.63±0.06 cm. Progesterone levels in these animals were 0.16±0.05 and 0.29±0.13 nglml (base line) on days 0 and 2 of the cycle, respectively and increased to maximum levels (3.26±0.59 ng/ml) on day 14 of the cycle. Estradiol levels showed the highest levels (15.21±0.43 and 18.07±0.15 pg/mi) on days 0 and 21 of the cycle, respectively.
In animals with 3-wave cycles, the maximum diameter of the dominant follicle in wave 1, 2 and 3 were 1.12±0.03 cm on day 10, 0.96±0.04cm on day 20 and 1.23±0.02 cm on day 26, respectively. The duration of the presence of corpus luteum was 24 days and the maximum diameter of the mature corpus luteum was 1.8±0.02 cm. Progesterone level was on the basal line on days 0 and 2 of the cycle (0.23±0.01 and 0.43±0.02 mglml, respectively) and increased to maximum levels (8.56±0.07 ng/ml) on day 16 of the cycle. Estradiol levels showed maximum figures on days 0, 4, 6, 18, 25 and 26 of the cycle where one or more large follicles were observed.
There was no significant difference in the days of emergence of l and 2nd waves, the persistence and the maximum diameter of the l dominant follicle and maximum diameter of the ovulatory follicle between animals with 2- and 3-waves of follicular development, meanwhile there was a high significance difference between the 2-wave and 3-wave animals in the persistence of the ovulatory follicle and the duration of the interovulatory intervals.
Out .of the five buffaloes which were injected with single dose of PGF2a, four animals showed estrous signs within 3-4 days of injection.
