Man has always needed fire, either to prepare his food or to warm himself. Yet, burn was considered as one of the most serious injuries that man tried to overcome. Documentation of burn care was found in the Egyptian papyrus as early as 1500 BC.(1)Burn is the traumatic effect of the application of physical heat in any form to the body. (2,3) The words ” burn injury” trigger, for almost any adult in the world, immediate and vivid images of excruciating pain and suffering.(4)
In fact, burns can be devastating injuries that result in death of some of their victims and those who survive after prolonged hospitalization and intensive treatment might end with life long deformities, contractures, scars, keloid and sometimes amputated limbs or fingers.(5) So, they are considered a major socio-economic problem because the cost of treatment is staggering and the loss of man hours is great.(2,6)Burns account for considerable proportion of morbidity, mortality and disability in all ages in any community. They are recorded to be the third leading cause of accidental death in the United States.(5) On the other hand, it is estimated that the burn mortality in Egypt is probably 2-4 times greater than the rate in USA. (7) Several reviews on burn mortality from different centers have shown an encouraging increase in survival and a significant decrease in hospitalization time. This improvement is attributed to the increased clinical and laboratory research on the diagnosis and treatment of burns including burn shock, inhalation injury, infection, wound healing and nutrition.(8) .
