Abstract

the aim of this study is to assess the role of mechanical ventilation in the prognosis of patients admitted to ICU with cerebrovascular stroke.
Cerebrovascular disease is the third leading cause of death in developed countries after heart disease and cancer.
Most patients with cerebrovascular events (CVE) do not develop significant respiratory problems but when present, they may be a marker of severe neurologic derangement.
10% of unselected stroke patients require mechanical ventilation during their hospital stay.
The clinical spectrum of respiratory disorders in stroke include abnormal breathing patterns, hypoxemic and hypercapnic respiratory failure, aspiration pneumonia due to an inability to protect the airways and clear the airway by coughing, and acute pulmonary embolism due to prolonged immobilization.
The aim of this study is to assess the role of mechanical ventilation in the prognosis of patients admitted to the ICU with cerebrovascular stroke.
The study was carried out over a one year period, from the first of October 2004 till the end of September 2005. These included 35 patients with cerebrovascular stroke.
Those patients were divided into two groups:
Group (І): Patients with CVS indicated for MV ventilation included 20 patients.
Group (П): Patients with CVS not indicated for MV ventilation included 15 patients.
