Abstract
Tracheostomy, from the greek tracheo plus stoma (mouth) it is creation of an opening into the treachea so long had surgery been the only method of performing tracheostomy until the introduction of a percutaneous method involing the precutaneous insertion of a guide wire with serial dilations of the trachea till introducing the appropriate sized tracheostomy tube. Multiple techniques are used for such; one involves serial dilations using progressively larger dilators .
